Goucher Prison Education Project

To help support college courses for 40 women in the Maryland Correctional Institution at Jessup. Goucher provides a program director and instructors who teach the same courses at Jessup that they teach at Goucher's Towson campus. It also enlists about 150 volunteers to help tutor the women. Current participants at Jessup range from 19 to 55 years old. They take one to three courses per semester while working 40 hours per week at the prison. Studies show that prison-based education can cut the recidivism rate by half, and enable women to re-enter their communities with new skills and confidence. The prison community benefits from the program because students serve as role models, encouraging others to transform their lives. Ten participants in this two-year-old program have returned home, and all are in school, working, or both.
